How to Attach Your Walking Stick Medallion
A few minutes of care at the trailhead makes all the difference. Follow these steps to mount your DINO medallion securely and keep the artwork looking great for years of hiking ahead.
1. Choose Your Spot
Pick a section of the stick that sits naturally in your hand — typically 6–12 inches from the top. Look for a relatively flat or gently curved area free of knots, cracks, or rough bark. A smooth surface gives the adhesive the best contact and helps the medallion lie flush.
2. Clean and Dry the Surface
Wipe the mounting area with a dry cloth to remove dust, oils, and moisture. Let it air-dry completely before proceeding — adhesive bonds much more reliably to a clean, dry surface.
3. Gently Shape the Medallion (If Needed)
Most walking sticks have a slight curve. If your medallion feels stiff against the stick, hold it in both hands and apply very gentle, even pressure to flex it slightly toward the stick's contour. Work slowly — small adjustments are all that's usually needed.
4. Optional: Pre-Drill for the Mounting Pins
The two small mounting pins on the back help keep the medallion from rotating over time. On harder woods, a thin pilot hole (slightly smaller than the pin diameter) can make seating the pins easier and reduces the chance of splitting the wood. This step is optional on softer woods where the pins press in smoothly by hand.
5. Seat the Mounting Pins
Align the pins with your pilot holes (or your chosen spot) and press the medallion firmly against the stick. Use the heel of your palm — not a hammer — and apply slow, steady pressure until the pins are fully seated. Rushing this step can bend a pin or crack the artwork, so take your time.
6. Press and Hold the Adhesive
Once the pins are seated, press the entire face of the medallion firmly against the stick for 30–60 seconds to activate the adhesive bond. Pay extra attention to the edges. Avoid flexing or twisting the stick for at least an hour to let the adhesive set fully.
Tips for Best Results
- Work in a warm, dry environment — cold or humid conditions can slow adhesive curing.
- Keep fingers away from the pin tips during seating to avoid pokes.
- If a pin bends slightly, use a flat tool (not your fingers) to gently straighten it before re-seating.
- The DINO artwork is printed on the face — avoid pressing directly on the image with sharp tools.
